Quite the Community: Big Donation from Big Cat Poker Run

Written by Jason Johnson for www.speedonthewater.com

When it comes to community-focused events in the performance boat industry, there are some great ones out there. One that comes to mind is the Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Michigan where the town rolls out the red carpet, the event raises a good amount of money for charity and many of the attendees are local—well maybe not from Boyne City or Charlevoix exactly, but from all parts of Michigan. The Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run is another one that stands out.

But after attending the Big Cat Poker Run a little more than a week ago, I’m starting to think the Northern California event, which raises money for the Discovery Bay Lions Club, takes the cake in terms of its community feel. Not only do many of the participants live (full time or part time) in Discovery Bay, the host city of the annual poker run, they also welcome out-of-towners with open arms, care deeply for the community and are not afraid to give back and make their voices heard.

That was definitely the case this year as the poker that includes a sponsor/VIP dinner on Thursday, a fun run on Friday and the poker run in and around the California Delta on Saturday raised nearly $100,000 for the Lions Club. With help from an enormous list of sponsors, the nearly 70 registered boats and the 300 participants, this year’s event raised the bar in terms of its organization, fun factor and overall generosity.

The participants also pulled out dozens of “Stop the Tunnels” signs for the beginning of the poker run to protest the controversial Delta Tunnels project proposed by California Governor Jerry Brown and Southern California water contractors. The display was organized by several local boaters in coordination with the Save the California Delta Alliance, a public interest association committed to working with local, state and federal government to create a balanced state water plan that keeps the California Delta a safe and healthy environment while providing clean water exports for other areas of the state.

Speedonthewater.com contributing photographer Erick Bryner, the owner of Firedrill Productions in Orange County, Calif., had an amazing time shooting the event and becoming an honorary member of the Discovery Bay community.

Editor’s note: Look for a full feature on the event in the next Speed On The Water digital magazine that will be available for download soon.

Teague’s Take: Fun With Outboard Cats

0
0

The boating community’s generosity has been rather impressive this year.

As Seen In Speed On The Water, Issue 28; Jan-Feb 2018

Similar to what the speedonthewater.com team did at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show, we took several boats out for rides during this year’s show in February. With
a focus on the super-hot outboard catamaran market, I was able to drive three smooth-running cats powered by twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines with my cohorts Jason Johnson and Matt Trulio. (We also got a chance to take out the extraordinary MTI-V 57 center console, which you can read about on page 57.)No, we weren’t testing the cats for top speed, acceleration numbers or anything else really, that’s for another day this year—look for more news on that soon. We mainly wanted to get a feel for the boats, turn them a handful of times and take a few quick blasts along Biscayne Bay and out to the unmistakable Stiltsville.

We ran the first Wright Performance 360 (Performance Boat Center’s demo model), a gorgeous red MTI 340X (the company’s first gelcoated 34-footer), and Fountain’s 32-footer that was originally built by Smart Marine (Fountain now owns the molds and even had its first production model in its Miami booth). Each boat ran well beyond 100 mph with ease and they all handled the choppy boat traffic slop in the bay pretty well.

There were some things I really liked about each cat we ran, and there were some things that could be improved upon—although it’s hard to critique much about the ones from Fountain and Wright Performance since they are first-edition models.

The best part about the three boats—and the sport cat class overall—is that there’s really nothing unsafe about the outboard-powered models thanks to their wide stance and wide tunnels. There’s always that stigma about cats not being safe, but these are not bad. In fact, each boat we drove ate up the water.

Another positive about the boats is that they didn’t take long to learn because they were fairly predictable. I have to say, I was equally impressed by the MTI and the Wright Performance (right) for different reasons.

The 340X had more of a hot rod look and feel, and it was quick, responsive and well built. The 360 was right there in terms of performance and quality of construction. It turned flat and smooth at any speed and it recovered from boat wakes immediately.

The outboards cats are the trend. Is it a fad? It might get to the point where it runs its course, but not any time soon, that’s for sure. They really are great-running, fun boats and there are a lot of options out there now. They’re less labor intensive for builders and they’re relatively easy to maintain compared to an inboard boat, but one thing the guy coming from an inboard needs to understand is that an outboard cat isn’t going to provide the same brute force acceleration he might be accustomed to in his boat.

That said, many of these boats are set up to get that last mph on the top-end so they’re not necessarily propped for acceleration.

All I know is that it should be fun to get our hands on several models at once in the same place under the same conditions. Based on sizes and prices, it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, but it’ll still be a fun roundup.

Featured Customer Lawrence Coleho: Where is the Rapid Rabbit Now?

As published in the March/April 2018 issue of Speed on The Water.

Photo by Erick Bryner, Firedrill Productions

Words by Jason Johnson

“There goes the Rapid Rabbit right there,” said Paul Miller, co-owner and general manager of DCB Performance Boats in El Cajon, Calif. “Look at it go. Lawrence loves running his boat—he’s relentless, damn near fearless.”

At the time, Miller was driving the all-new DCB M33R catamaran (read about it on page 82) with twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines toward the first stop of the Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., when Lawrence Coelho, of Tulare, Calif., came zooming by on the other side of the lake in his DCB F29 catamaran powered by a pair of 1,100-hp engines. Some 20 to 30 minutes before the Rapid Rabbit sighting, while we were idling though the Lake Havasu channel for the poker run parade lap, Miller and I had a conversation about Coelho’s passion for performance boating and the fact that no other DCB owner has had such far-ranging representation of the brand.

Photo by Daren Van Ryte, OC Photographics

“Lawrence isn’t just a great DCB ambassador, he’s a great person—he travels all over the country for fun and gives back to the different communities he visits,” Miller explained, adding that there’s little to no chance another DCB boater has ventured into as many different waterways as Coelho. “I don’t know how he does it. Most of the time he does it by himself, too. He’s definitely not afraid to tow his boat around the country. He’s also not afraid to run in big water; just look at the pictures from the run in Boyne City, Mich., last year. He was out there running his 28 with boats that were 35, 40, even 50 feet long. He really loves this stuff.”

Photo by Pete Boden, Shoot 2 Thrill Pix

Of course having two boats—his single-engine 1,200-hp DCB 28 Extreme V-bottom that he’s owned since 2008 is also named Rapid Rabbit—allows him to attend events in opposites sides of the country, explaining how he could be in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada one weekend and Discovery Bay, Calif., the next. Still, just for the fun of it, let’s rattle off a dozen events Coelho attended in 2017.

Even with two boats, this is a tough schedule to keep: Desert Storm Poker Run
(May/Arizona), Texas Outlaw Challenge (June/Texas), Boyne Thunder Poker Run (July/Michigan), GLOC Performance Boat Shootout (July/Oklahoma), Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run (July/Georgia), Old Hickory Fun Run and Raft-Up (July/Tennessee), Can-Am President’s Cup Poker Run (August/Canada), Big Cat Poker Run (August/California), 1000 Islands Poker Run (August/Canada), Lake of the Ozarks Shootout (August/Missouri), Lake Cumberland Poker Run (September/Kentucky) and Key West Poker Run (Florida).

Notice those are all in different states and that there are two Canadian runs. He attended several more events like the DCB Regatta, the Lake Powell Challenge and the Monster Storm Poker Run in the fall in Arizona, not to mention the SCOPE Poker Run in Southern California and his own personal fun run from the California Delta to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Photo by Tom Leigh, Tommy Gun Images

“Lawrence is a lively character, an adventurous individual and an all-around good person,” said Cherilyn Noack of Teague Custom Marine, the Valencia, Calif., high-performance marine facility that takes care of Coelho’s boats. “I’ve had the opportunity to get to know him at various events and from his boats coming in to the shop. I’ve also helped him with some side projects to showcase the boat and with designing his Rapid Rabbit shirts. He’s kind of the strong, silent type but once you get to know him it’s obvious he has a big heart.

“Lawrence is proud to represent both Teague and DCB at the events he attends—it’s refreshing to have a customer like him who is so into this,” she continued. “He is what Teague Custom Marine is all about. We’re a little different because we have a real passion for this—we’re boaters, too, and we enjoying giving back just like he does. Also, Lawrence is probably one of the most daring boaters I know. He does a lot of events by himself and travels all over the country to run in them. He’s always so proud to be out there in a ‘smaller’ boat, representing. He’s good about sending me pictures, too.”

Noack said Coelho sent her a photo last fall of him driving under the Golden Gate Bridge in foggy conditions. “Most people wouldn’t even try to venture out into the open ocean right there, especially on a foggy day, but for Lawrence it was just another day of boating.”

So what exactly fuels the California native’s enthusiasm for performance boats? Coelho, who is in the amusement park business, grew up boating and also has a strong passion for cars and snowmobiles. He said he originally learned the expansive California Delta waterways in his 16-foot Bayliner, and he gives a lot of credit for his ability to drive his V-bottom—he prefers it over the cat in big water—to the time he spent playing around in rough water on personal watercraft he’s owned over the years.

Photo by Ray Lee, Speedboat Magazine

The fact that much of his business communications and networking take place remotely whether he’s on the road or at home allows Coelho to travel as much as he does. He said he tries to keep things simple, affordable and manageable so that he doesn’t need a team of people with him—the size of his boats is an example of that. Oftentimes he does the events by himself. He also has no one at home trying to persuade him not to go boating.

Photo by Erick Bryner, Firedrill Productions

“I don’t have a wife telling me to stay home—I don’t put myself in that situation any more,
“Coelho said with a chuckle. “I’ve been married twice and I have two daughters who are doing well on their own so I feel like it’s my time to do what I want to do. I love traveling and seeing different scenery. Most places I visit have great food to try, too, and usually the eye candy is good. I’ve been around horsepower and boats my whole life. Horsepower makes it happen, right?”

Photo by Pete Boden, Shoot 2 Thrill Pix

Coelho admits he likes feeling like the underdog and stepping up to the challenge of running in big water at certain events in his “little” 28-footer. The picture in this story of him airing out the boat on Lake Michigan during the Boyne Thunder Poker Run proves it.

Based on how many places he’s visited around the country, an obvious question is what’s his favorite place to boat?

“I would have to say Lake Powell—that lake is one of a kind,” Coelho said. “Sault Ste. Marie just north of Michigan on Lake Superior is wonderful; the same goes for Boyne City with Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. The hospitality in Boyne City is over the top.”

Coelho, who isn’t afraid to throw his hat in the top-speed shootout ring, said he doesn’t really enjoy shootouts, but he does them because he’s there and wants to support the event.

“I’m not crazy about getting in line for an hour to run my boat—I’d prefer to burn a tank of gas running around all day,” he said, adding his gratitude to both DCB and TCM for supporting him at different events across the country over the years. “Bob Teague and the whole Teague Custom Marine team are amazing. His daughter, Cherilyn, has been especially helpful and supportive in terms of scheduling, promotions, arranging for service of my boats and more. I run both boats out of Teague’s house and wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Only Coelho’s 28 Extreme has TCM power—an enhanced 1,200-hp 1050EFI to be exact paired with an IMCO Marine SCX drive—the F29 has a pair of “Frankenstein” 1,100-hp engines that were rebuilt by Savage Marine and upgraded and maintained by TCM.

The final question, after realizing that Coelho might be the best ambassador for the DCB brand ever, is when is he going to get a new DCB? Probably not any time soon, Coelho said, adding that he loves both of his boats and plans on doing 30 or more runs again in them this year.

And just like the Energizer Bunny, the Rapid Rabbit keeps going and going.

Teague’s Take: Season of Giving

0
0

The boating community’s generosity has been rather impressive this year.

As Seen In Speed On The Water, Issue 26; Sept-Oct 2017

Over the past few months, thanks to the efforts of some notable names in the industry such as Reggie Fountain and Nigel Hook, there has been a lot of talk about records. Kilometer records—Fountain Powerboats is building a boat specifically to challenge the V-bottom speed record early next year—and endurance records—Hook’s 48-foot SilverHook V-bottom set a record from Key West, Fla., to Cuba in mid-August.

For the purposes of this column, I’d rather
talk about some records that were set by
three different events I attended in August
and September. Charitable records.

Between the Big Cat Poker Run in Discovery Bay, Calif.—an event my business, Teague Custom Marine, has had the pleasure of supporting for many years—the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri and the Lake Powell Challenge in Page, Ariz., I was blown by the generosity displayed by the performance boat community.

All three events—held on extremely different waterways—exceeded expectations in terms of money raised for charity. And to me it’s quite obvious why.

Each one has an extremely dedicated staff that puts in hundreds of hours without asking for any sort of compensation, and each one has an army of volunteers who are on hand to make sure everything about the event goes smoothly.

This whole performance boat community I’ve been a part of for decades has always been about giving back. From the offshore races in Sarasota, Fla., that benefits the Suncoast Charities for Children to the poker runs ranging from Pirates of Lanier in Georgia, Emerald Coast in Florida and Powerboating for a Cure in Virginia, charity is normally the driving factor behind most events.

But getting back to the three events I was fortunate enough to attend this summer, each one raised the bar in 2017.

Thanks to nearly 70 boats and 300 participants, the Big Cat Poker Run ended up with close to $100,000 in donations for the Discovery Bay Lions Club.

The 29th annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, which hosted more events around the expansive lake in a week than any other performance boating event I know of, collected $200,000 that was donated to 36 different organizations.

Then there was the ninth annual Lake Powell Challenge, which is a must-attend event in my opinion for the scenery alone.

Jerry Moyes, Burl Griswold and the entire team behind the event are saints. In a matter of a couple of days at one of the most remote marinas in the country—Antelope Point Marina—they managed to raise a whopping $500,000 that was donated to JDRF (To read all about it Click Here and go to page 36). Yes, a half-million dollars. Kind of mind-blowing, huh?

Kudos to everyone involved with those events as well as others around the nation.

Traditionally, Big Cat is a huge success: with a strong showing of boats, perfect weather, fun boating, parties with live music, and best of all a safe event with zero incidents. Bob Teague explained to speedonthewater.com part of what makes Big Cat unique: “We’re out here with everything from ships to personal watercraft and there are 1,500 miles of freshwater waterways. It’s just a class of people who know about boating, have nice equipment and know how to get along the waterways…The water is fantastic, the crowd is amazing and we have the kind camaraderie people would die for.” We can’t wait this year’s event!

Teague Putting Finishing Touches On New DCB ‘TCM 31’ Cat

Written by Jason Johnson

With the Big Cat Poker Run in Discovery Bay, Calif., on the horizon this week, there’s a ton of excitement in the Teague Custom Marine camp. Not only is the Valencia, Calif., high-performance marine shop the title sponsor of the annual event on the California Delta that benefits the Discovery Bay Lions Club, the company is going to be showing off its new 31-foot “TCM 31” catamaran from DCB Performance Boats that is powered by a pair of TCM’s latest 1,400-hp supercharged engines connected to Mercury Racing No. 6 drives with lower units blueprinted by Wilson Custom Marine.

“We haven’t done any real testing with the boat yet—we just did a quick dip at Castaic Lake on Thursday to make sure everything was working as it should be and that there were no leaks,” said TCM’s Cherilyn Teague Noack, the VP of marketing (amongst other roles) for the company founded by her father, Bob Teague. “I think my dad is super excited about Big Cat—he looks forward to this event every year, plus he has the new boat this time. He was downplaying it a little bit when he came back from the lake, but I know he really likes the boat.

“It really is incredible and it’s so pretty,” she continued, adding that the boat’s name, Stacked Deck One-Six, was her dad’s call sign when he was a leader of the first platoon of the U.S. Army Long Range Patrol “D” Company in Vietnam and Cambodia between 1968 and 1970. “The boat’s beauty is hard to capture in photos. Every color on the boat has flake in it except for the blue pins. DCB did an amazing job with the gelcoat and the upholstery. The interior is sweet; so is the custom trailer. And the stereo is crazy good.”

Noack, who explained that finishing the boat took longer than expected because TCM has been extremely busy working on customer boats all year, can’t wait to see what kind of reaction the DCB—Teague’s third boat from the company—gets during the Big Cat Poker Run.

Along with DCB, of course, TCM relied on many business associates and friends to bring the boat to life. A one-of-a-kind, fully loaded, custom trailer from Adrenaline Trailers in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., carries the 31-footer. The cat’s privately labeled Teague-logo LED-equipped gauges, which are complemented by a Garmin GPS display between the driver and copilot dashes, were supplied by Livorsi Marine while the controls are from Latham Marine. IMCO Marine’s Nevada location supplied the steering, helm and tie bar, while the company’s Southern California location provided the mufflers. For communication, Teague opted for Tiger Performance Products equipment. And for the entertainment, DCB installed new Bluave Marine Audio coaxial speakers and subwoofers to go with a Fusion head unit.

Noack, who said the project showcases the best of the best, also made sure to thank BlacART Creative Group for working with TCM to revamp the existing name and logo to match the colors of the new boat, which features silver pearl, metallic gunmetal fade, candy blue pearl fade to candy violet pearl, and Aventador blue pinstripes.

How Cool Is Cru?

The kid is only four years old, but after seeing him at the Big Cat Poker Run in Discovery Bay, Calif., last month and the Lake Powell Challenge in Page, Ariz., this month, I have a feeling little Cru Noack knows he’s a cool kid. Now whether he knows how cool he is or how good he has it is another story as his parents, Cherilyn and Josh Noack, are two key members of Teague Custom Marine, the Valencia, Calif.-based company founded by Cru’s grandfather (and Cherilyn’s dad), Bob Teague.

Cru Noack proudly wore his Lifeline life vest at Antelope Point Marina during the 10th Annual Lake Powell Challenge in September.

Not only does Cru rock his very own TCM-embroidered youth lifevest from Lifeline Race Gear at events, he can already tell you what kind of boats his family owns and what size the boats are whether it’s the brand new M31 Widebody from DCB Performance Boats the Teagues debuted at the Big Cat Poker Run or the family’s 40-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran or the new 26-foot Adrenaline Powerboats cat Josh and Cherilyn picked up in late August and are planning to rig and power with twin Mercury Racing 300R engines.

At the Big Cat Poker Run in Discovery Bay, Calif., Cru and his little brother, Nixon, took a ride in their grandparents’ new DCB M31 Widebody catamaran powered by twin 1,400-hp TCM engines.

I don’t think he’s driving any boats on his own yet, but surely that isn’t too far away—at least when he starts asking to take charge of the wheel and throttles.

“Cru is so cute about all the boat stuff and he’s super into the logos and names of the boats,” said Cherilyn, an obviously proud mother who enjoys taking both of her sons to boating events even though it can be a lot of work—fortunately she can usually rely on some help from her parents or Josh’s parents who own a DCB F29 catamaran. “He’s now starting to pay more attention to the Teague logo around the shop or at events, and it’s great because he says ‘Teague Custom Marine boat shop’ every time he sees it. We haven’t really forced any of this on him either, he just really likes the boats.”

From Baba (Bob Teague, left) to little Cru, the Teague Custom Marine crew was looking sharp on Saturday at the annual DCB Owners Regatta.

Of course that seems like a given being that he is a boy and when he visits his parents at work he gets to see engines and boat parts everywhere he turns sitting next to models from Donzi, Eliminator, Fountain, Howard, MTI and much more. But that isn’t always the case.

Cherilyn said Cru, who so far is very accepting and protective of his 11-month-old brother, definitely makes his grandfather—one of the most legendary offshore racers and performance boaters of all time—proud.

“My dad can be a little strict with him because he wants him to behave, but he’s a very loving grandfather and I can tell he enjoys his time with his grandkids,” said Cherilyn, who is happy to be at home after a busy month that included trips to the Big Cat Poker Run, in which TCM is a presenting sponsor, the Lake Powell Challenge and last weekend’s DCB Owners Regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. “Boating has always been a family thing for my family and Josh’s family so we’re happy we can continue that with our kids. I’ve always said that a family who boats together stays together.”

As for little Cru, who won’t be so little for much longer, he’s pretty lucky to be part of such an esteemed boating family. I’m sure one day he’ll realize that.
