Team AMSOIL Battles Lake Michigan for 3rd at SBI Great Lakes Grand Prix

Unknown-2

Immediately after a stellar performance at Saint Clair, Michigan, Team AMSOIL Offshore crossed the state for the SBI Great Lakes Super Boat Grand Prix in Michigan City, Indiana.  It was the first time since 2010 that the Team had raced at Michigan City and the large local spectator turnout that year had them anticipating another great event!  Not only does the picturesque white sand beach pack with people for miles, there is a Saturday night street parade and block party that, combined with the race, attract over 100,000 fans!

While the conditions in Saint Clair are almost always fast and flat, Michigan City is on the south east coast of Lake Michigan, which is generally rough and treacherous.  Aside from the rough water final race at last year’s Key West World Championships, the team had not run the AMSOIL 368 Skater in its current Superboat configuration in rough water “washing machine” conditions commonly found on the Great Lakes and in the Gulf.  Bearing that in mind, they went to work Friday and Saturday to find the right setup.  Throttleman Bob Teague and Driver John Teague tested multiple setups on Saturday as the Lake whipped up inconsistent 3 foot waves.  After 60 miles of hard running, they felt confident in their setup for the conditions.

Unfortunately, conditions on Lake Michigan can vary day to day.  The waves can be wind driven locally, or from 400 miles away, and stormy weather this time of year can be difficult to predict.  Making things more difficult, it is almost impossible to judge the severity of the water from the shore.  On Sunday, after hearing conflicting reports from some local sources, and further conflicting reports from participants in the first race of the day, the Team had a setup dilemma on their hands. Ballast must be solid form and set prior to racing since there are no pumped liquid or movable ballast systems allowed.  Stern drive gear ratio is also set at a 1.61:1 reduction per class rules. This makes propeller selection one of the few and most critical decisions a team can make for any given race setup.  After some debate, Bob and John settled on a set of propellers, and went out to the race course.

Before the father and son duo even made it to the milling circle, they knew they had made a mistake.  At the start, they took the AMSOIL Skater in closer to the beach, looking for smoother water to pull better top speed and sweep the first turn on the outside.  The first turn was too lumpy to carry good speed through it, and they came out even with boat #33 Sailor Jerry after some dicey moments.

Unknown

The back straightaway proved to be even worse with large holes exiting turn 1 and unpredictable holes at about half track.  Bob and John dove inside and outside over the next few laps, trying to find a way to get their setup to work and were forced to fall in line with Sailor Jerry.

The water was not just rough but out of rhythm and mostly unreadable, in other words, typical Lake Michigan.  They knew 80 plus miles in that water could break boats and men, and fell into survival mode knowing that their setup could not compete.  On lap 6 Cleveland Construction retired with a destroyed crash box or drive plate, losing forward gear.  After a few more laps, conditions improved slightly on the front straightaway and the #77 Skater started to pull the top RPM and speed they needed.

Although they pushed harder and improved lap times, Bob and John could not catch the #33 MTI and finished the race on the lead lap in 3rd place.  Congratulations to WHM Motorsports and Sailor Jerry on their 1st and 2nd place finishes, respectively.

AMSOIL Offshore Battles Challenging Course at Port Huron for Overall Win

Team AMSOIL Offshore traveled back to Michigan for the third weekend in a row for their last Great Lakes stop at Port Huron, Michigan.  The historical shipping and trade city is located at the southern base of Lake Huron and the mouth of the Saint Clair River, which is also the border between Michigan and Canada.  The race is a very unique international effort that involves officials and events in both the United States and Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.  In terms of exposure in the past, the Port Huron venue was overshadowed by the crowd and boat count of the Saint Clair race two weeks prior.  However, the event has been gaining momentum, and with a boat count over 40 and huge local spectator turnout on both the American and Canadian shores, the venue was a great success for great racing!

On Friday the Team AMSOIL Crew gave the boat a complete evaluation.  After the rough and unpredictable water in Michigan City, all the boat’s systems needed to be checked for stress and shock loading related failure.  The Teague Custom Marine Supercat spec engines passed inspection and with flawless vital signs. A leaking crash box transmission was changed, and the team continued prepping for testing.  On Saturday, conditions were calm and the river traffic was light.  Throttleman Bob Teague and Driver John Teague achieved speeds nearing 140 mph on the back straightaway of the course.  They used their setup experience for the area from past years of racing at Port Huron and settled on a setup combination for Sunday.

Action on Sunday heated up long before the Supercats took to the water in the third and final race of the day.  In earlier races, a Class 6, then a Class 5 boat spun and flipped in turn one, which was tucked into the Sarnia Bay entrance.  Thankfully, Bob and John would be able to sight the course on a full parade lap prior to milling for the start.  The course at Port Huron is always tricky, but this year it was especially so.  The overall lap distance was lengthened to 5 miles.  Both the north Sarnia Bay turn and south turn were squeezed close to shore for spectators and shipping lane clearance, making for very tight turn exits.  There was also a start finish chute, and a left hand pin for fuel dock clearance.  Overall, the course featured 6 right hand pins, and two left hand pins.

The Supercats and Supervees lined up in the first start of the third race, with Cleveland Construction #4 assigned the inside lane against AMSOIL #77.  On the drop of the flag the two silver skaters drag raced side by side down the front straight into the Sarnia turn.

AMSOIL followed Cleveland Construction around the outside, and gave chase down the back straight.  The zig-zag nature of the course layout on the Saint Clair River made driving the outside line extremely difficult.  Bob and John had a top speed advantage, but the #4 had just enough holeshot to stay established and command the racing line.

Three times AMSOIL dove inside while exiting turns and bit by bit made up time.  Finally, they squared off the second pin of the Sarnia turn and got the straight line they needed down the back straightaway.  In sloppier water than they anticipated, especially with Vee bottoms on the course, they skirted the pins on the inside of the course and pulled up deck to deck with Cleveland Construction at over 135 mph.

Having established the inside line, the #77 railed the south turn pin to pin and made a perfect exit.  Bob and John were able to run unimpeded, and continued to lap the other classes running before taking the checkered flag and victory for the 50 mile race.

AMSOIL Offshore would like to thank Ed Smith & Julie Kimmel of Rivers Bend Marina out of Saint Clair, MI for their hospitality and hard work creating a first class event at Port Huron.

EVENT WRAP UP: BIG CAT POKER RUN 2015

Teague Custom Marine presented the Big Cat Poker Run event, based out of the Northern California town of Discovery Bay, on August 14 and 15.  This unique poker run has become one of the largest performance boating events on the West Coast and takes participants on a boating adventure through the waters of the California Delta with stops in different cities.

Although the event name includes the word “Cat”, this is not to preclude V-bottoms from entering the poker run; all boats are welcome.  All types and sizes of boats are welcome and with the addition of a “short course” this year, there was something for everybody.  In addition to two courses this year, also new was increased national media coverage.  Shooting the event for the first time was Florida-based photographer Jay Nichols of Naples Image, who worked from a helicopter on both days of the event.
Mass Exodus by the levee
Teague Custom Marine has been a co-title sponsor with Colledgewood Inc. since the event’s inception in the year 2000, and the beneficiary is the Discovery Bay Lion’s Club.  Thus the moniker “Big Cat” refers to the Lion head in the logo of this charity organization.  Volunteers from the local community and the Lion’s Club take care of poker run registration duties and orchestrating many details of the event.

Friday’s agenda included a lunch run to Sugar Barge, a waterfront restaurant located on Bethel Island.  This is just a quick jaunt from Discovery Bay, and a nice warm-up for the larger amount of miles to be covered by water during the poker run the next day.  The lunch run traditionally began as a way for the locals to lead the way in order to give the newer participants and out-of-towners a tour of the Delta.

Friday evening’s welcome and registration party was held at the Discovery Bay Marina.  Participants had the opportunity to register for the poker run if they had not done so in advance, socialize with other boaters at the tents set up on the marina lawn, grab a drink or appetizer, and enjoy live music by the Edwins Brothers.  Teague Custom Marine had its apparel tent open during the party and enjoyed greeting customers and friends.

Saturday morning began with a driver’s meeting held at the Discovery Bay Marina.  A total of 60 boats were signed up and ready for the day’s run.  About half of the fleet was Teague Custom Marine customers and/or TCM powered entries that came from all over California and Arizona.

Ed Stewart MTI

Some of the TCM fleet included Ed Stewart’s 42-foot MTI, Disco Kat, Peter Watkins’ 44-foot Skater, Double Down, Ralph Rast’s 29-foot Fountain, Higher Powered, Bob Vila’s 38-foot Hustler, Just Chillin’, Glenn Hoffman’s 38-foot Eliminator, Miss Behavin’, Tom McMillin’s 29-foot Scarab, Natural High, Milt Baehr’s 39-foot Cigarette, Pain Killer, Rick Cannon’s 29-fooot DCB, Yikes!, Lawrence Coelho’s 28-foot DCB, Rapid Rabbit, Bob Teague’s 28-foot Eliminator Speedster, Todd Welling’s 36-foot Skater, Stray Cat, Lou Hanhan’s 38-foot Formula, Blow Me Twice, and Sean Moore’s 46-foot Skater, Lick This.

11870788_10153494201672207_8474376257753804833_n

The boaters depart after the driver’s meeting to the first stop on the run, Pittsburg Yacht Club, whenever they are ready. Spectators walk out on the levee from the marina towards the Discovery Bay Lighthouse where many of the boats can be seen taking off from land.  An announcer was setup on the point by the lighthouse to give information to the spectators about the boats passing by.

From Pittsburg, CA the poker runners make their way to the lunch stop at Nena’s Mexican Restaurant in Stockton, CA by way of the Carquinez Strait and the San Joaquin River.  Once the lunch gathering winds down, the group heads back to Discovery Bay and at this point have rounded out about 150 miles by water since the start of the day.  The post-poker run party is held at the Discovery Bay Marina.  Live music was provided by West Bay Rhythm, dinner by Boardwalk Grille and finally a raffle to choose 3 different event entrants who won prize purses.

Teague Custom Marine would especially like to recognize volunteer Big Cat coordinator Glenn Hoffman for stepping up and giving tremendous effort and heart to put on the event and continue its community legacy. Proceeds from the event, currently estimated at over $25,000, go though the Discovery Bay Lions Club to support programs for children with visual impairments.

Overall, the Big Cat didn’t disappoint, with hot summer weather, fun boating, parties with live music, and friends new and old.   Photographer Jay Nichols reported to Speed On The Water, “It’s really different out here, but beautiful in its own way.”  We tend to agree.  The community feel and thousands of miles of freshwater waterways are hard to beat.
We can’t wait for next year!

Monster Bash 2015 is upon us – October 16-17, 2015 in Lake Havasu, AZ! We are excited to announce we will be supporting Monster Bash 2015 as the Title Sponsor. We have the 2015 Monster Bash Poker Run coming on strong!

Priority online registration for Monster Bash is open now at www.lakeracerllc.com – take advantage of the best pricing, now.

Once again, we’re supporting the Lake Havasu Food Bank, as our designated charity, so a percentage of the poker run jackpot will be donated and you are encouraged to make any other donations of non perishable food at the event. The Monster Bash Poker Run is little smaller and easier going event than our Desert Storm event in April, with a fun theme and costumes encouraged.   This is our eighth year for Monster Bash and it has become a favorite of our long time participants and growing bigger than ever!

This event is limited in number and size of boats.  For boats thirty five feet and under, with special invitation to larger boats who have provided special support to our events.  We want to encourage those who feel the Desert Storm event no longer accommodates their boat.  This year Eliminator Boats has asked to include their owners gathering, so you’ll see some Eliminator activities on the Schedule.

Teague Custom Marine, plus the Nautical Resort, Barrett Custom Marine, Domn8er Powerboats, Eliminator Boats, Elton Porter Marine Insurance, IMCO, Nordic Boats, Octane Marine, Pirate Cove, Prestige Marine, and Wozencraft Insurance have encouraged Lake Racer LLC to organize this event with their sponsorships, so make sure and thank them!

This Poker Run is themed for Halloween to make it fun for the whole family.  Included in this event is an opportunity for a holiday photo of each boat in front of the London Bridge. These will be included on an event photo CD to be mailed out after the event.  We’ll have our Friday Lunch Run and evening reception/registration party!  The Poker Run is on Saturday and we’ll top off the event with an awards costume party Saturday night in the Nautical Conference Center.

Don’t forget the Friday Lunch Run to Havasu Springs is reserved only for those who register before October 1st; you will receive the special wrist bands by mail two weeks in  advance.

See you soon!

Teague’s Take: Shootout Supreme

$

The best way to run safely at high speeds is in a shootout.

Attending the 27th annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and being a part of the broadcast team again, reminded me why that event—and really top-speed shootouts in general—is so awesome. Obviously because of everything the Central Missouri lake has to offer, plus the weeklong events associated with the Shootout, there’s nothing like it in the country.

Bob Teague (left) was an integral part of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout broadcast team again this year.

Bob Teague (left) was an integral part of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout broadcast team again this year.

The only negative part about the event is that it’s impossible to do everything and be everywhere.

I’ve participated in the Shootout a couple of times—once a few years ago with my friend, Roger Neighbors, who happens to be a Teague Custom Marine customer, in his 42-foot Fountain, and another time with my former offshore racing teammate, Lizardo Benitez of Peru, when the event was held at the old location—Shooters 21.

Shootouts are fun, no doubt, but when you compete professionally on an offshore racecourse on a regular basis, they are not the most exciting thing. That being said, the coolest aspect of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is that you don’t have to take part in the weekend’s top-speed runs to have a good time at the event, which features activities all around the lake throughout the week.

Whether it’s rafting up as a spectator over the weekend, taking part in the poker run, walking the Shootout on the Strip, attending the Hall of Fame awards dinner, giving rides to special needs children, hitting Super Cat Fest at Camden on the Lake or just visiting the massive amount of destinations along the lake, there is so much to do. And it all happens because of the Shootout.

From Captain Ron’s owner and Lake of the Ozarks Shootout frontman Ron Duggan on down, the organizers deserve special recognition for the efforts put forth to bring people to town and raise money for the community.

Yet beyond all the showmanship and the hype from stereo shootouts and silent auctions to best paint jobs and Top Gun champions, the thing I most appreciate about the Shootout is that it gives people a controlled environment to run high speeds in the safest possible way.

It’s one boat at a time, with safety crews in place and the ability to control traffic on the waterway around the course. Of course things can still go wrong—we witnessed a worst-case scenario in 2014—but the format, when orchestrated correctly, provides an opportunity for boats of different sizes with various power packages to run for top speed in the safest environment possible.

The format also helps curtail excessive speeds when it comes to other parts of the event, such as Friday’s poker run. You want to prove that your boat runs 100, 150 or 180 mph? Show us on the course.

That’s the main reason the Shootout was started at the Desert Storm Poker Run several years ago. A poker run just isn’t the place to be doing speed exhibitions. Poker runs are family and social gatherings with people who share similar interests. They also provide opportunities for boaters to showcase their toys and for people in the business to tout their abilities and their products.

Performance and horsepower come with the territory—I get that—but in a poker run with participating and non-participating boats heading in various directions, running excessive speeds is frowned upon for obvious reasons.

Because of its sheer size and the spotlight it has upon it, it’s hard to compare the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout with any others like it. However there are a some notable ones across the country, including Desert Storm and the Texas Outlaw Challenge, which provide appropriate environments to showcase speed.

It was nice to see a new event pop up as well— the Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees Performance Boat Challenge Shootout in Oklahoma. What was even nicer to see was
the organizers of the first-year event reaching out to the folks in Lake of the Ozarks to utilize their services and expertise to host a safe and organized event. The organizers of the GLOC Performance Boat Challenge Shootout have already announced dates for 2016 (July 7-10). I’m guessing we may see more of these pop up at various events in the near future. They are great non-professional opportunities for people to find out what their boats are capable of. I don’t want to downplay anyone’s boating experience who runs at Lake of the Ozarks or any other top-speed shootout, but these are amateur events.

At the professional level we race under a sanctioning body and a rulebook, and if you want to see how fast your boat runs, there are sanctioned kilo runs in which your boat has to meet the essential race-trim requirements.

Are there professionals who run in the Shootout? Of course. This year alone, John Cosker, Randy Scism, Randy Sweers and Neil Wobbe took part. Some people even hire pros to run their boats for them as they know their limitations. Again, it’s all about safety.

Congratulations to our clients who participated in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout & SuperCat Fest 2015. It was great to see #teaguepower on the course!

“So I am having TCM rebuild my engines/trannys, service my drives, upgrade my fuel delivery and water intake systems. What a great experience I am having; Teague communicated a clear scope of work and I receive regular updates on progress. Yesterday I had business close to Teague and showed up unannounced to check in on the progress and was so pleased with what I found. My boat was plastic wrapped to protect it and everything was so clean you could eat off of it. All the work I had approved was clearly being performed and Teague was doing the “little” things you would expect from a shop with this level of reputation. All my used parts are set aside to give to me and after walking through their shop you can tell that this is a very well managed business with pride in ownership everywhere you looked. This type of business model is so rare in the aftermarket “performance” world and I just wanted to take a moment to comment and share my positive experience.” – Don Johnson, Yorba Linda, CA

Team AMSOIL Offshore Battles to the Lead before Spin Out in Heartbreaking 2nd Place Finish at SBI Clearwater Nationals

Team AMSOIL geared up the 368 Skater Superboat for the 7th Annual Clearwater Super Boat National Championship, September 25-27.  This year was the first time the Team returned to this race site since 2010, when they were victorious over the then-brand-new Stihl 388 Skater.  Clearwater is always a great venue with excellent spectator attendance on both the beach and boat viewing areas.  The course is a slightly modified right-hand rectangle with the start/finish line and turn 1 in close proximity to a large pier, creating a unique viewing experience for fans and a dicey racing experience for the drivers!

On Friday the entire boat and both engines were inspected and serviced, with excellent results, no doubt due to the proven techniques of Teague Custom Marine and proven products of AMSOIL Synthetics.  Saturday was the designated testing time for the event and conditions were typical of the Gulf of Mexico this time of year.  Wind was from onshore and the water was smooth but not very fast, with sloppy bumps here and there.

The team tested multiple prop setups and adjusted weight balance multiple times before Throttleman Bob Teague and Driver Paul Whittier narrowed in on an agreeable setup.  They both felt confident about the boat heading into Sunday.

The Superboat class was scheduled for the 2nd of 3 races Sunday, at about 1:30 pm.  The conditions for Race One were very similar to the day before, and the team decided to keep their testing setup with only minor changes.  Teague and Whittier got into the boat for the long idle from the wet pits out to the course.  As they were making their way to the course, the wind and clouds changed, and the water got noticeably calmer as compared to the conditions of the first race.  Would this work for or against the AMSOIL Skater?  Propeller selection is always a slight game of chance, and inevitably some teams will bet taller and some shorter for the conditions.

Five Superboats made the call: AMSOIL #77, WHM #5, Cleveland Construction #4, STIHL #US1, and Sailor Jerry #33.  The green flag was thrown very fast, with the boats only just getting on plane, traveling 35 mph.  It was a drag race towards the front straightaway.

Team AMSOIL Offshore got a good start and was established in front of WHM until they hit a roller, along with Sailor Jerry, that sent boat boats kiting upwards unexpectedly.  The bauble scrubbed speed and allowed WHM to move up and establish the inside lane for turn 1.  After the first turn AMSOIL was in 4th place and dealing with heavy traffic and dirty water.  After a messy and crowded turn 2, Teague and Whittier ran the inside line down the front straight and finally got some space to run in.  They fell in behind WHM and then cut a perfect inside line through turn 1, passing Sailor Jerry on the turn exit.  They carried the momentum through a nice lane down the back straight and walked away from Stihl by the entrance of Turn 2.  Now it was time to go hunting for WHM!  For 5 laps, Team AMSOIL sliced and diced, wowing the crowd and commentators cutting through rooster tails and taking every pin they could.  They felt their setup was a touch shorter compared to WHM’s and tried to make every turn as tight and short as possible.  Twice on the back straight they pulled up and were established on the inside, but couldn’t hold the position.  Never one to leave a door open, Billy Mauff in WHM made sure to give them the rooster tail treatment for their efforts.  Finally, AMSOIL pulled up deck to deck on the outside on the back straight, ready to battle into turn 2, and then WHM broke a propeller.  AMSOIL Offshore gained the race lead with a comfortable margin over Sailor Jerry and Cleveland Construction, who were still battling for 2nd place.

Team AMSOIL took a few laps to give themselves and the equipment a rest, and picked up the pace for the second half of the race.  They were overtaking the Vee-Bottom Superboat Extreme classes that were also racing as they counted off laps.  Running into turn 2 behind the leading Vee, Twisted Metal, Team AMSOIL darted inside for the first pin of the turn, and the aggressive move nearly ended in disaster.  The AMSOIL Skater took a set as it hit the Vee bottom wake, and the skegs and propellers became disconnected from the water, resulting in the boat swapping ends.  It was a quick spin, and the boat travelled backwards and rolled up on the Port side, snuffing out the Port engine underwater, before flopping back over, right side up.  Bob got the engine to fire back up quickly and they continued turning right, got the boat on plane, and re-entered the course, but not before Cleveland Construction got past and into 1st place.  They took the front straight and Turn 1 a little easy to test the integrity of the Skater 368’s equipment, and everything felt good.  Teague and Whittier put on a good charge for 4 laps, but it was not enough time to catch Cleveland Construction, and they finished in 2nd for the day.  Upon removal of the boat from the water, the Team discovered the Starboard skeg had indeed been severed in the spun, and the boat had taken on quite a bit of water.  Teague and Whittier reported the boat drove surprisingly well on one skeg! They lamented the loss of the 1st place finish that was in their grasp, but were relieved the spin did not end in a flip.  Video evidence proved it very nearly did.

Team AMSOIL Offshore would like to congratulate Cleveland Construction #4 on their well-earned, SBI Superboat class victory!

AMSOIL’s great sponsorship package, dedicated racing department team, and superior lubricants all make it possible for Team AMSOIL Offshore Racing to achieve success!  Team AMSOIL is “one of the most accomplished offshore racing teams ever” and has captured many National and World Championship titles.  The Team was awarded the APBA US-1 Offshore National High Point award for Super Cat class in 2014.

The AMSOIL Dominator Racing Oil continues to be proven as the best choice for all extreme performance marine engines.  The Team has also proven that the absolute best oil for a Mercury dry-sump VISSM drive is AMSOIL Severe Gear for the ultimate in gear protection with minimal parasitic power loss.  Teague Custom Marine is an authorized AMSOIL dealer and offers the complete line of high performance lubricants in its store and for purchase over the phone.  There are also opportunities available for you to become a dealer!

See you at the races!

Speed, Speed, Speed

First and foremost, the top reason to get involved with performance boating is the speed. There is something absolutely thrilling about coasting across the water at 70, 80, 90 mph or higher. When you finally slow down, all you can think about is getting back on the water for another adrenaline rush. If you are an adrenaline junkie who likes fast cars and swift motorcycles, do yourself a favor and try out the incredible hobby of performance boating.

Building Your Own Speed Demon

It is extremely satisfying to build your own performance boat. When you start upgrading a boat and feeling the enhanced power, acceleration, and top-end speed, you’ll feel a lasting connection between you and the machine. Taking the time to learn about performance upgrades is very rewarding, and putting this knowledge to good use on your boat will give you a sense of pride that few hobbies can match.

What can you do to put more speed on your boat? We have plenty of options to improve your boats performance at Teague Custom Marine. You can increase the airflow through your engine by using superchargers, which forces air into the engine, or performance exhaust parts that allow the air to be swiftly removed. One of the simplest ways is by installing a performance propeller, which increases efficiency and speed, and also helps you get the most power out of your engines.

Here are some of the top parts for increasing speed and performance:

Teague’s Take: Brotherly Love

One brother’s new power package for his 38-foot Fountain leads
to a refreshed engine upgrade for the other brother’s 35-foot Donzi.

As Seen In Speed On The Water, Issue 21; Year End 2016

As Seen In Speed On The Water, Issue 21; Year End 2016

With parts of five decades dedicated toward this passion turned profession, I’ve shaken hands, worked on boats, raced alongside, made friendships and struck business deals with some of the most interesting people I would never have dreamed of meeting before diving into the powerboat industry with Teague Custom Marine in 1972. It’s arguably the highlight of my business ventures — that and having my family beside me along the way.

Family—mine in particular—has been a topic in this column before, but this time around I’d like to highlight another family, one that’s been a part of the TCM extended family for some time. Earlier this year we took care of two special customers — Eric and Ken Smith, the brothers who run the respected Northwest car dealership Dave Smith Auto Group with their sister, Michelle Dahl — and pulled off a tandem power upgrade involving both brothers’ boats.

I remember meeting Ken when he brought his 2005 Fountain Powerboats 38-foot V-bottom to us and we removed the Mercury 500EFI engines and completely rebuilt them to TCM 825EFI spec, including dual-stage water pumps, larger oil coolers, new EFI harnesses and ECMs A few years later Ken went back into project mode on the boat, and added a ton of high-end stereo and lighting, which added a lot of weight so the boat, in turn leading him to want more power to compensate. So when he came to us last winter wanting to upgrade the power in the 38-footer to our TCM 1050EFIs, we were excited about the conversion. What worked out even better, for us and for Eric, who had been thinking about upgrading his 2006 Donzi Marine 35 ZR powered by twin Mercury Racing 525EFI engines, is that the power plants and drives from the Fountain could be refreshed and installed in the Donzi.

They worked out some kind of deal and shortly thereafter we had both boats at the shop. The Fountain was taken completely apart, and everything that was blue in the engine compartment was redone black. The stock gimbal housings were replaced with IMCO Marine HD assemblies, all transom hardware was pulled, resealed and reconfigured with TCM adjustable pickups.donzi

IMCO’s SCX4 drives with Mercury Racing Pro Finish props were used without spacers. New TCM sea strainers and pressure reliefs were installed and all of the original rigging was cleaned up and re-secured.We built new polished and red TCM 1050EFIs and installed them with custom Custom Marine Inc. sport tubes and custom 4.5-inch outlet tailpipes fabricated in house. To comply with Coeur D’Alene’s strict sound regulations, we used Gibson Performance Exhaust 4.5-inch power curves customized in house for clearance. After testing, we had successfully met the goal of a 2,100-plus-horsepower Fountain with surface drives, that idles and shifts silently at 800 rpm, rides like a Cadillac, planes off with out any drama and tops 100 mph with ease.

Ken told us the boat does everything he wants it to do — it throws a huge roostertail, hauls ass and handles better than ever thanks to the new SCX4 drives. What’s funny is my son, John, who was involved in the rigging of both boats, told Ken he should just put his money into a new boat, but Ken said he liked his stereo too much to part with the boat.tcmengine

With Ken’s boat underway, we removed the engines and drives from the Donzi, left them complete and sold them. The 825’s were placed on stands and evaluated. With only a thorough tune-up, and some standard updates, they were deemed to be in good condition and ready for more hours of use.

The existing engine mounts were installed along with CMI Gen-X headers to work with the stock Silent Choice tailpipes. TCM adjustable water pickups were installed, along with sea strainers, pressure reliefs, through-transom dumps, larger oil coolers and a flush system. The fuel system was redone to accommodate the horsepower, including larger pickups and remote filter heads.

Previously, only one engine’s power steering was hooked up to the boat’s system, with the other pump just running in a loop. We installed the correct Mercury ITS block and TCM SS remote reservoir to enable dual power steering pumps supplying the system.fountain

New instrumentation also was installed, including boost gauges, a GPS speedometer and a Garmin touchscreen chartplotter. The engines were installed with the Fountain’s TCM-built 1.35:1-gear-ratio IMCO SC drives, configured to be standard length with steering caps and a new tie bar for the ITS transom, with the propellers turning in.

Our testing before the boat left for Coeur D’Alene resulted with the selection of Mercury Racing Maximus propellers pushing the boat to 110 mph on the rev-limiters with blistering acceleration. The boat’s stock looks, flat hatch and silent idling were retained, which were all priorities for Eric. A faster top speed, which could improve with additional testing once Eric has more seat time with the new power and configuration, is a definite possibility. But then again the Donzi should already surprise plenty of people with its new level of performance.

On top of the rigging, both boats also received gelcoat repair and refinishing in house. We were proud of how each project came together and know the Smiths are proud of their boats as well. If they weren’t they wouldn’t have spent much of their summer weekends using them — with their families.

At an age when most people are looking at slowing down, Bob Teague continues to live life at full throttle. By Eric Colby

As published in Poker Runs of America Magazine, Vol. 16 #4, 2013.

Twenty years ago when I was the new Editor at Powerboat magazine, Bob Teague and I were sitting in a boat on the Colorado River during the publication’s grueling evaluation program known as The Performance Trials. I mentioned that when we were finished with the 10-day grind I was looking forward to just staying on dry land. I asked him what his plans were and his response was something to the effect of, “We’re staying out here and going boating.”

I must have looked at him like he was about to jump out of the boat. But he explained a simple philosophy that has helped him turn Teague Custom Marine into the largest privately owned business venture in performance boating. Again, I’m paraphrasing, but the idea was that if he made his hobby his career he would always love doing both.

“We know because we boat,” Teague said during a recent phone interview. “We know what our customers are doing because we are doing or have done the same thing.”

Bob Teague exhibiting the “no knock policy” during his service in the United States Army as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam.

You can’t argue with the success. After returning from the Vietnam War, during which Teague proudly served his country in the United States Army as an infantry platoon leader, he established Teague Custom Marine in 1972. While growing Teague Custom Marine and attending college at Los Angeles university to attain his degrees, he also worked full time as a Los Angeles City Fire Captain through the 1990’s. At the same time, Bob was an integral part of the Powerboat Magazine editorial staff as a Lead Test Driver and Technical Editor.

The first Teague Custom Marine location was in Burbank, California. At that time, Teague focused on high-performance vee-drives, day cruisers and jet boats working closely with boat manufacturers like Schiada and Spectra. Recently Teague bought back one of the Schiada 21 foot vee-drives he built as a personal boat in 1987, and plans to restore it.

The “V-8” Harry’s Hoffbrau Offshore Race Team in Ventura, CA in the early 2000’s with owner Larry Kramer at the helm, Bob Teague on throttles, and John Teague as navigator.

An early contribution to the success of Teague Custom Marine was Bob’s affiliation with Bob Nordskog’s Powerboat Magazine endurance and offshore race teams. Bob and his brother Norm, maintained, and built the engines for the marathon-class inboard boats and offshore hulls that Nordskog raced in American Power Boat Association, POPBRA, and MBRA events. They also rode in the boat with Nordskog in the offshore races with Bob Teague as navigator and Norm as riding mechanic. In those days, the navigator was critical because boats were running various long laps in the open ocean races that were as long as 250 miles. Teams had to stay on course because they were racing to a buoy in the middle of the ocean and there were no electronics. Teague kept the fleet of Powerboat Magazine Specials on course with nothing more than a compass, a paper chart, stopwatch, and a good set of eyes. Bob also navigated on several record setting endurance runs with Bob Nordskog such as San Francisco to Los Angeles in 5 hours, and 57 minutes which still stands today. Later, Bob Teague would run a pair of record setting runs in his Team Woody Super Vee from Pucusana to Ancon and back in the grueling waters near Lima, Peru with Lizardo Benites upsetting a record set by Fabio Buzzi in the Grand Argentine.

While he was part of Nordskog’s team, Teague was also building his own legacy as a fierce competitor in the Grand National class in marathon racing in a pair of Grand National inboard marathon boats starting in 1977. The second of the boats is his famous GN 77 laid up by Schiada. His success in the class earned Teague several championship titles and his first induction into the APBA’s Hall of Champions in 1988, which is the equivalent of being named a member of the hall of fame in other sports.

Teague Custom Marine headquarters in Valencia, CA.

Bob Teague has had one of the most storied careers in performance boat racing with arguably the longest tenure in the sport’s history. Bob has to think hard to remember all of the boats he has raced. At this point, an educated guess is that Bob has raced somewhere over one thousand races in various classes. A passion for competition has resulted in wining more than a dozen World Championships, and dozens of National Championships. Along the way, Bob also set course speed, endurance, and kilo records, and has been inducted a couple of times into the APBA Hall of Champions.

After Nordskog passed away, Teague took over the reigns of the Pacific Offshore Power Boat Association, as if there was any choice other than for him to do so. After calling to duty a group of the best volunteers to help with the organization, what was supposed to be a West Coast regional organization flourished with fleets as deep as 60 boats at its most popular races. Teague was instrumental in bringing a national-class event to California when he worked with Powerboat Magazine to put on the Ventura Offshore race. In the mid 1990’s the POPBRA fleet went to Key West in force and won every class except one. Bob has continued to serve in various volunteer capacities such as Endurance Inboard and Offshore Commissioner, Technical Chairman, Referee, Inspector, Race Chairman and so on because he believes that he has an obligation to give back to the sport and industry.

Bob has raced in just about every class or Offshore over the years including outboards, inboards, vee-bottoms and cats. In the early 1990’s, Teague throttled for two teams, Larry Kramer’s 40’ Fountain, Harry’s Hoffbrau, in the Super Vee class and Rob Storelee’s 34’ Magic, Magic Potion, in the Offshore B class. Kramer’s team also competed on the National circuit and the Teague Custom Marine name started gaining momentum nationwide powering such teams as Nigel Hook’s three Scarabs in A, B, and Super Vee classes, Archer Marine, Citgo, and Furst respectively, Rigue Ford’s fleet of Skaters that raced under the Ragamuffin banner, Rick Bowling’s Gone Again, Bob Vila’s Phase II, Jerry Sorrentino’s In-M’Ocean Phantom, the late Harry Christensen’s All Out Advantage, Ben Curtis’s Running Wild, Mike Smahlik’s Ettore Streak Free, a fleet of Factory I, II, and III boats, and more. For many years, Bob raced two classes at each event. Bob and Larry Kramer then campaigned the Universal Studios sponsored Extreme Super Vee Team Woody for a few years. In the Factory II Class, Bob throttled for Greg Rivera in the Sun Country Formula and later throttled for Mike Flannigan in the Lightning Strikes Donzi Super Vee winning a UIM World Championship in Key West.

Part of the Teague family at the Key West Offshore World Championships, 2010.

In his more recent career, Teague partnered up with John Talley in the first of two silver Skater 36s that he would make famous. The Liquid Metal team ran successfully in the Super Cat light class powered by twin Mercury Racing HP525s winning the APBA World and National Championships in 2003, which lead to the induction of Talley and Teague into the APBA Hall of Champions. When the team sold the boat to Roger Bourget, Bob ran a season with Roger while he was in the process of building a new Skater 368. He painted it silver and reached a sponsorship agreement with AMSOIL products. He also found a super talented offshore racing driver in veteran Paul Whittier.

Whittier started racing in POPBRA when Nordskog was still alive with his friend Kurt Willows in an outboard-powered Velocity, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Whittier raced his way up through the ranks of offshore, competing primarily in the outboard-powered Stock class in a variety of Skaters named Secret Agent. Paul eventually built a 36 Skater Cat Lite (In Contempt and Ettore) that competed against Bob and John Talley’s Liquid Metal Skater. Both boats were sold at about the same time so when Bob called his long time competitor and friend Paul to find out what he was up to, he said he was taking some time off to concentrate on a home building project. Bob invited Paul to come and race in his new Team AMSOIL boat and what resulted was a hard to beat team. “The main thing for me is he’s an excellent driver and we think alike,” said Teague. “The better the driver is, the better the throttleman is.” The team holds an APBA-sanctioned kilo record of 131.982 mph on the Salton Sea and was among the most successful in its class. Team AMSOIL has won about 80 percent of the races it entered in the Cat Lite Class. Look for Team AMSOIL to emerge in a new class.

When Whittier isn’t in the boat with Teague, John Teague joins his father. They ran the Miami to Bimini Run together a few years ago on Father’s Day. And when John turned 21 four years ago, he asked his father (for the fourth year in a row) if they could race the Parker Enduro in the mothballed GN-77 boat. Much to Mom’s chagrin, Dad had his son’s back. “I told her, he’s an honor student, a fine young adult, and he wants to race that boat.” In the nostalgic race boat’s first time in the water in 16 years, Bob drove the first 100 miles, John drove the next 100-mile leg and Bob finished the final 100 miles and the team finished second overall, a mere 40 seconds behind.

But perhaps it was an in-cockpit video that John posted of him and his dad in the Skater in a race in Michigan a couple of years ago that shows that his dad still has plenty left in the tank. When the green flag flew, Bob’s meaty throttle hand thrust forward and appeared not to pull back until the checkered flag was theirs.

From L to R: Bob Teague, Andrea Teague, at the marriage of Cherilyn Teague and Josh Noack, 2013.

Between his testing at Powerboat, Teague Custom Marine, and involvement in racing and in organizations, there isn’t a performance boat Teague hasn’t run, including turbine-powered cats. He has the ability to figure out how to make a boat run correctly and safely (and indentify an unsafe one). I have experience this personally on more than one occasion. He has a natural feel in a boat that you need to witness first hand.

All the while, he was also building his company, raising his two children, John, 25, and Cherilyn Noack, 28—she recently married Josh Noack, a TCM employee—with his wife Andrea, and establishing a reputation for building some of the most reliable products and engines in the performance boating world. Both kids graduated with honors from Cal State University, Northridge and play important roles in the family business.

To say that Teague has unmatched energy would be an understatement. He would work at the Fire Department for days at a time and then pack up for a week to go to Florida to work with the Powerboat Test Team. We would be up at dawn for photo shoots, test boats all day and then while the rest of us were sleeping. Then he would go back and catch up full steam ahead at Teague Custom Marine.

Today Teague Custom Marine is the only manufacturer of high-performance marine engines aside from Mercury and Ilmor to have a full line of powerplants above 650 horsepower that are compliant with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions certification requirements. “In our engine family there are actually five engines that have been individually emission certified,” said Teague. The line starts with an 825-hp offering and goes up to 1365. Teague hired a consultant to liaison with EPA and CARB officials and then worked with Whipple Industries in Fresno to accomplish the task which required putting together a certified emissions bench to test the motors. In accordance to the requirements, they knew it was important to develop emissions compliant engines. In the process, better overall engines were developed with increase durability.

In addition to the engines, Teague Custom Marine offers a full line of performance engine and rigging components and accessories most of which the company designed and builds in house. “We have project boats going all the time,” said Teague. “If we needed it twice there’s a pretty good chance that the industry will need it.”

Even Teague’s approach to how he staffs his business is unique. “Everybody here is an adult and they’re really good at what they do,” he explained. “To that end, there’s not what I would call a service manager. There is no boss of the people back there. They all have their own specialty, but everyone can pretty much do everything.”

When a customer brings in a project, whether it’s for routine boat or engine maintenance, a full re-power, or complete installation, one member of the team gets the assignment as the lead coordinator for that job. Teague remains intimately involved in direction and communication but the customer also has an open communication with the staff person assigned to his project.

He also stresses the importance of being a one-stop shop for his customers. “In order to do it right, you have to do it all. If you’re building engines, you need to control the installation environment. When someone brings a boat here, we know there will be better success if we do the whole thing, not just one part.”

The Teague Custom Marine family of high performance marine engines ranges from 825 to 1500+ HP.

To get away from it all, Teague—what else—goes boating. He and Andrea own homes at the Colorado River and on Discovery Bay in northern California and Teague Custom Marine is a title sponsor of events in each area, the Desert Storm Poker Run and Monster Bash in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and the Big Cat Poker Run on the California Delta which benefits the Discovery Bay Lions Club. “We’re gone more weekends than we are here when the weather’s good,” he said. But even when the weather is less than ideal, he said, “There’s something cool about going to these places like Parker and Discovery Bay when it’s winter and gray and cold and have a fire, and of course do some boating.”

Teague’s personal boat fleet is one that would make most performance boaters drool. He owns a Skater 44 Super Sport with TCM 1365EFI’s, a Skater 368 race boat, a 32 DCB with TCM 1200EFIs, an Eliminator 28 Speedster with twin TCM 825EFIs and Ilmor Indy drives. These and other boats are in house project boats that Teague uses to develop and validate products. In addition to Teague products, the 44 Skater and 32 DCB were used to validate the Velvet Drive 72 LHP transmissions, and the 28 Speedster was used to validate the Ilmor Indy drive with the TCM 825EFI package. Teague still has a Malibu ski boat that he can slalom behind, the GN 77 is alive and well and now the 21 Schiada is back in the fleet.

While he participates in many poker runs during a given year, the names of Teague’s pleasure boats have little do with card games. The 32 DCB is called Stacked Deck One-Six. Stacked Deck is for Teague’s Company D when he was in the Army, One is for First Platoon and Six is the platoon leader. The Skater 44 is called Roving Gambler, which was the name of Teague’s Battalion in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Bob Teague being honored at the OPA Offshore Racing banquet.

His appreciation for veterans is obvious in his choice of charities. Teague Custom Marine supports the military charity, Soldiers’ Angels, which helps out veterans. “We have to do something to give to this community of people who aren’t as fortunate as we are,” said Teague. Other charities include New Horizons, Make-a-Wish, Havasu for Youth and the Lions Club. Teague and Chip Romer joined together to continuously sponsor the now established Designated Operator program in Lake Havasu.

Teague’s company does testing at Castaic Lake near the company’s 30,000-square-foot headquarters in Valencia, California. Not too long after moving TCM to Valencia from Van Nuys, Bob became aware of a great program at the Lake that he decided to get involved in. For the 16th straight year, Teague Custom Marine is the title sponsor of the Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguards program at Castaic. The program involves training more than 400 youth and teens at the lake each year in such skills as swimming, teamwork, lifesaving and CPR.

Bob Teague is part of the live broadcast team during the Key West Offshore World Championship races each November.

Being a natural leader means that people are drawn to Teague—his charisma is undeniable—to fix problems at events he sponsors and when it comes to poker runs like Desert Storm, that means trying to make them safer. “Over the years, I have encouraged several modifications to control the poker run speed and to minimize the thought that it’s a race. Adding a Shootout where boats can run at speed in a controlled environment, and endorsing rules for speed limits for boats with backseat passengers,” he said. Ultimately, however, it could be as simple as remembering what kind of event you’re participating in. “Poker runs are regattas. They’re not races. I don’t race my pleasure boats, and I don’t pleasure cruise my race boats,” he said. “I’ve never had an accident in a pleasure boat while pleasure boating.”

Whether you see footage of Bob Teague in a race or run alongside him in a poker run, there’s one constant. He loves boating—always. “We don’t just say we’re boaters, we are performance boaters which gives Teague Custom Marine the edge on making our customer’s experience better” he said.

After the largely successful television feature aired on NBC Sports the last two years, the network has high hopes for this year’s three episode format. As previously reported by Speedonthewater, “With the expanded programming, fans will get to see more race action, and the in-depth coverage will allow them to get a behind-the-scenes look at the boats and teams that make offshore racing so exciting.” The production team also relied on on-board footage from several of the race teams including Team Teague Custom Marine, powered by a pair of Teague-built SuperCat engines. The Team’s patented camera angels and techniques pleased the production crew and we are hoping that much of the footage will be integrated into the show.

“We ran hard, didn’t damage anything and the motors ran perfect”, Bob Teague, Throttleman, recounted about the week in Key West. It was a very solid week of racing for Teague Custom Marine in the ultra-competitive Super Boat class, who placed 4th overall for the week. Flawless Teague Power and a first class crew!

For more than 30 years, Teague On Tech—a question-and-answer column—was the most popular department in Powerboat magazine. As most performance-boat enthusiasts know, Powerboat ceased publication in 2011, but Bob Teague, the man behind the column, is still very much with us as the owner of the renowned Teague Custom Marine, an engine-building, rigging, service, restoration and parts shop in Valencia, Calif. He’s also a multi-time offshore racing world champion who runs a 36-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran in Super Boat International’s Superboat class.

Teague currently authors “Teague’s Take,” a wide-ranging column for the bi-monthly digital Speed On The Water digital magazine. (He’s also a test driver for Speedboat magazine.) But while his excellent contribution covers a host of subjects, it is not a technical question-and-answer column for folks facing issues with their powerboat engines, drives, setup, accessories and more. And there’s still plenty of need and desire among powerboat owners for just that.

That’s why we’re bringing back “Teague On Tech” to speedonthewater.com as a regular feature on the website and digital magazine. Teague has generously agreed to answer questions from readers. (Back in the day, and we doubt this has changed, he didn’t even have to look up part numbers when he wrote his column.) Of course, not every question will be answered—but you’ll never know if you don’t send one (or more).

Right now, we don’t know how frequently Teague on Tech will be published on the site. That will largely depend on the flow and quality of questions, as well as the time Teague needs to answer to them. But eventually we’d like to see one or two a week and use the best to publish compilations in each issue of our digital magazine.

Questions can be submitted to us at Speedonthewater.com via email at mattrulio@gmail.com or jajo2327@gmail.com and must be accompanied by your full name (sorry, no screen names), city and state, contact information and a digital photo of your boat, engine, etc. The make, model and year of your boat, as well as your engine, also must be included.

We look forward to receiving your questions. We’re even more eager to publish Teague’s answers.

Although Matt Trulio wrote a news story about reviving the longstanding “Teague on Tech” column that I wrote for Powerboat magazine for too many years to count, I figured it was worth mentioning here that we’re looking for questions that I can answer on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for speedonthewater.com. Some of the best subject matter just might end up in this column, too.

Thanks to decades of experience testing boats, racing boats and working on a wide range of boats at Teague Custom Marine in Valencia, Calif., answering questions has become my forté. It’s actually a pretty enjoyable thing to do, so please don’t hesistate to email me your questions.

Here are a couple of questions I answered a while back that might be helpful to some of you.

Sloppy Steering
Q:
I own a 2005 Nordic Rage powered by a MerCruiser 496 Mag HO engine with Dana Marine headers. The boat has a Bravo One X drive spinning a lab-finished 28”-pitch Bravo One propeller. The boat runs 80 mph as indicated on the Livorsi Marine GPS speedometer.

I’m having problems with my stock steering system. My steering responds quickly when turned to the right but has 2 to 3 inches of slack when turned to the left. This occurs no matter what the position of the steering wheel.

This problem did not exist until I hit a 40-foot vine on the Illinois River at 45 mph that put a hard pull on the boat. The steering went away immediately. My local dealer pulled the lower unit, which was loose, and tightened and checked the alignment, which was OK. However, these adjustments did not help the steering. The lower unit is very tight and in great condition. I would love to go to hydraulic steering, but the funds are not available right now. Would single- or dual-ram steering help?

How can I adjust or fix the stock steering, which has always been tight?

A: First of all, if your single-engine Rage is capable of going 80 mph, it should have hydraulic steering. Dual-ram systems are always better than single-ram systems because the rams inherently have more force extending than when retracting. Dual
rams balance the system.

The reason that your steering seems to have slack in one direction, and not the other, is because of the effect of propeller torque in combination with damaged or worn steering components. Cable steering always has a little play, but yours sounds a bit excessive.

I suspect that the tiller arm attachment to your gimbal ring is sloppy. This can be checked by moving the drive side-toside while the boat is on the trailer. If you do not see an immediate corresponding movement of the steering system on the inside, the tiller arm is loose. This can be repaired from the outside by cutting an access hole in the housing and tightening the bolt on the tiller arm. Cover plates are available to seal the access hole.

Being that you have noticed a difference since striking the submerged object, a thorough inspection of your transom assembly and gimbal ring is in order. If something is cracked or broken, the results could be catastrophic. There should be no play in any of the four pivot points in the transom assembly or gimbal ring.

Your steering system is likely equipped with a Brazil steering control valve assembly. With this unit, it is important that the steering cable is in perfect alignment with the unit and is not in a bind from any other rigging in the boat. The cable attaches to the center cylinder of the Brazil valve. There are two flat spots on the cylinder adjacent to where the cable nut attaches. The two flat spots must be positioned so they are vertical or the steering sometimes acts weird. I would definitely check everything discussed before using the boat again. In the long run though you should really install a full hydraulic steering system on this boat. It is a matter of safety.

Mercury’s five-blade Maximus propeller works well on larger single-engine boats, but it can create torque to one side or the other during acceleration or deceleration.

Mercury’s five-blade Maximus propeller works well on larger single-engine boats, but it can create torque to one side or the other during acceleration or deceleration.

Maximus Or Not
Q: Would a Donzi 28ZX benefit from a Mercury five-blade Maximus propeller?

A: The Mercury Maximus propeller has quite a bit more blade area than just about any other propeller designed for use on Bravostyle drives. The standard diameter also is a large 15 5/8 inches. Accordingly, the propeller is very efficient. If you are currently running a Bravo One four-blade propeller on your singleengine 28-footer, it is likely that your propeller slip is above 15 percent. Going to a Maximus propeller is likely to cut that figure in half.

The Maximus propeller works well on larger single-engine boats such as yours. However, due to the Maximus propeller’s stock large diameter, it can cause a singleengine boat to torque to one side or the other during acceleration or deceleration. The correct propeller for your boat will have to be one that is Mercury lab-finished with the diameter reduced. I think the correct diameter for your boat will be 15 1/4 inches.

Also, the pitch on the Maximus propellers is understated. So, for example, if you are currently running a 28”-pitch four-blade, you will need to drop to a 24”-pitch or 26”-pitch Maximus. Being that the drive is relatively deep on your Donzi, it is common to remove about 5/8 inch of the diffuser ring on the Maximus propeller to improve top-speed performance and reduce transom lift. The diffuser aids in bringing the boat on plane, but it’s unnecessary with the efficiency of the five-blades working together.

You may or may not see a significant increase in top speed with the Maximus propeller. But you will definitely experience a significant increase in midrange efficiency with your boat. I believe that the boat will be going 6 to 8 mph faster at 4,000 rpm compared to the current setup.
